All Eyes on Penelope
Posted in Hair, Makeup on 19 May 2009

I’ve got to say that I wasn’t blown away by the gowns displayed on the red carpet at this year’s Cannes Festival! However, if I had to choose one gown and one look that I found stood out, it would be the always beautiful Penelope Cruz. She wore a violet grecian inspired gown to the Broken Embraces Premiere, paired with a half up ponytail and diamond teardrop earrings.

Inspiration for all you ladies looking to get that effortless, yet elegant look for your wedding!

Back to Old Hollywood Glamour
Posted in Bridal Accessories, Hair, Makeup on 15 April 2009

With all the buzz of birdcage veils among brides today, it seems as though the look has now transcended to the red carpet. At the premier of the movie Grey Gardens, actress Drew Barrymore was head to toe old Hollywood glamour, wearing a vintage nude-colored Alberta Ferretti gown, birdcage veil with jewelled hair pieces, and a bejewelled Roger Vivier clutch.

Ladies looking to recreate a similar look for their wedding should take inspiration from the hairstyle, complete with marcel waves and hair candy. Although, the dark plum lipstain might be a bit much for most brides (not many can pull it off!), consider wearing a lighter hued lipstick, which will look equally as fitting.

Thoughts on Red Lips

In my opinion, nothing makes a bride in stark white stand out more than cherry stained lips. I mean, look how stunning she looks!

Although, I hate when people talk about makeup as though they are trends that come and go, because it creates the false pretense that just about anything can be pulled off by everyone. (Even if purple blush became a trend for 2020, there’s no way I would be wearing that!!!)

Red lips do not look as great on ladies with dark or olive skin tones (like myself). Rather, the look is best for women with fair skin or those who are looking for a more ‘vintage’ look. This can be best described in the picture above where the birdcage veil, defined eyes, and dark hair complement the bold lips perfectly.

Here’s what gown designer Melissa Sweet said about her makeup inspiration for her spring catwalk collection:

“Color is always our inspiration when we start designing a collection, and the makeup is the finishing touch. This season we were inspired by an old-Hollywood glamour feeling, so we thought a bold red lip paired with soft straight hair would feel pretty and modern. A strong lip color complements a bride’s vibrant and healthy glow—and looks amazing in photographs.”

So, while I have to admit red lips are bold, sexy and glamorous, I think it should only be worn on your wedding day if it complements your skintone and features. Likewise, a bride has to have the tenacity to reapply her lipstick throughout the night to keep herself looking her best!

Star Style: Charlize Theron’s Elegant Look
Posted in Makeup on 28 December 2008

The makeup you choose for your wedding day affects how you look and how you feel. I remember for my graduation, I made an appointment with MAC and was completely unprepared for what I wanted. I ended up HATING my make-up and it’s still one of the things that stands out in my mind when I think about the day!

So, if you’re looking for something elegant for your wedding, here’s a look that you can re-create yourself or one that will inspire your make-up artist. Dior makeup artist Shane Paish was aiming for a “elegant, yet strong” look.

First, Paish created a base with Dior Airflash Spray Foundation. This created an almost ‘airbrushed’ effect that evened out Theron’s skin tone and diminished the appearance of any fine lines or skin irregularities.

Next, the eyes were defined with Dior 5-Colour shadow in Elegante and lined with a black kohl liner.

To open up the eyes, Paish used DiorShow Mascara. This is one of my favorite mascaras, aside from my Lash Injection. It lengthens and separates really well.

To add a warm glow, Theron’s cheeks were dusted with Dior Pro Cheeks in Hip Peach.

MAC Emanuel Ungaro Collection
Posted in Makeup on 8 September 2008

MAC Cosmetics will soon be unveiling its limited-edition make-up collection called MAC Emanuel Ungaro this October, after teaming up with designer Esteban Cortazar. Included in the collection are a lipstick, lipglass gloss, eye shadow, Technakohl liner, cream colour base, Zoom Lash mascara and brow set. The products were inspired by the Ungaro autumn fashion collection.

With shade names such as pure rose, soft flower, and flower mist dew, this feminine and romantic collection seems to fit the image of a beautiful bride. It’s a refined collection that as mentioned is limited edition, so keep your eyes open this fall. You may be lucky enough to try it on and consider getting a makeup artist to use the collection on you for your wedding.

I found this easy-to-do face chart on Stila’s site and thought it would be a great choice for a bride on her wedding day. Without the foundation, this look is light, yet warm due to the cherry crush on the lips & cheeks and golden tones on the eyelids.
