8-8-8 wedding

If you aren’t aware, today is a lucky and prosperous day for many. It’s basically 7-7-7 revisited but to a greater extreme. The Chinese consider the number 8 to stand for prosperity. In fact, if you know anyone who is a traditional chinese, you would expect that they would try to get the number 8 in anything that they own. Just this past month, my dad went to the automobile registry and requested that he get to choose his license plate just so he could get a number eight in it. Ha! But he had just missed it because someone else had grabbed it (must have been asian :P).

In fact, even the Summer Olympic Games are starting exactly eight minutes after the eighth hour on the eight day of the eighth month in the eighth year of the 21st Century. Goodness that’s a lot of 8’s.

The picture above was taken at the Hokkien Association building in Klang, outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Aug 8/08 where 238 newly wed couples tied the knot. In fact, there are numerous weddings taking place where the couples are not asian, yet believe that indeed ‘8′ is their lucky number.

Unique Bouquets - Blacks, Beads, and Twig
Posted in Bouquets, Unique Ideas on 7 August 2008

Black is always a sharp wedding color when incoporated with white and is slowly becoming a very popular theme. In fact, Ashlee Simpson carried a bouquet and had centerpieces made of black roses. Well, mini calla lillies also come in a black variety called the Black Schwarzwalder. However, they are actually deep purple in color but look almost black when they are fresh. As they age, they lighten to a rich purple color. Click here to learn more.

I have to admit this is perhaps the most unique bridal bouquet I’ve ever come across. Pictured here is a bouquet of 300 beaded stems made of galvanized silver wire handwrapped with beading up top. The beads seen here are Celestial Crystals, though the seller says Swarovski crystals can be substituted. Interested? Click here to learn more. They also make matching boutonnieres.

Here’s a twist off a simple bouquet of red roses. This bouquet incorporates green twig dogwood throughout the otherwise classic bouquet.

Marry Me in Space
Posted in Geek Ideas, Unique Ideas, news on 22 June 2008

Now this is something you can boast about to all your friends and family. “I got married in space.” How about that?

Japanese space transportation provider Rocketplane Kistler and wedding planner First Advantage have come together in this venture that will allow couples to take their vows in space. The wedding aboard the Rocketplane XP suborbital spaceplane will cost 240 million yen ($2.2 million), this includes a wedding ceremony aboard a 1-hour space flight that reaches an altitude of more than 100 kilometers (62.1 miles), as well as a photo and video album, original dress, wedding certificate and other ceremonial items. The price also includes cost of transportation to and from the launch site, accommodations, a live broadcast of the ceremony to friends and family at a reception hall on the ground, and 4 days of rehearsal. The space wedding services are scheduled to begin in 2011, but you start applying from early next month.

“I Do” Atop the Sydney Harbor Bridge
Posted in Rings, Unique Ideas, news on 15 June 2008

A Glasgow, Scottland couple were the first to marry on top of the Sydney Harbor Bridge on a rainy Tuesday. The couple, both wearing watersuits, climbed 134 meters (440 feet) above the harbor for their nuptuals.

“I always wanted somewhere unusual to get married and this was the first place, somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit and I thought it would be amazing to do it,” Tullan told Australia’s Network Seven television.

“I’m so excited I don’t believe I’ve actually done it.”

And just in case, the bride’s wedding ring was attached to a safety rope.

Take Home Photos on Display
Posted in Geek Ideas, Unique Ideas on 5 June 2008

We have all been to weddings where you get your picture taken with the bride and groom, but how many times have you left without the photo? Or, have you considered having a photo booth? It can cost over $1000.

Here’s a nice alternative. Set up your own picture station with a laptop, digital camera, and photo printer. I’m a fan of HP, so check out their line of printers here.
Have a friend or hire someone to man the booth. Pose, snap, and print! Consider setting up rows of string like the picture above and hold the snapshots with butterfly clips. The photos will be ready to go when it’s time for the guests to head home.

Or, if you prefer, use the ‘clothes-line’ idea to put up any pictures of you and your groom (baby pix, when you first met, first date etc.). I’m sure it will be a great alternative from the usual slideshow presentation.

Bridal-Inspired Fashion

Veils in Fashion?

Check this out:
Japanese designer Misa Harada’s new bridal-inspired spring/summer 2008 collaboration with Yohji Yamamoto:

“The collection is entitled Just Married - this symbolises the designer’s marriage, or commitment, to the label and also the Yohji Yamamoto concept: women wearing men’s clothes,” Harada tells us. “My take on the collection was to translate masculine hat forms to feminine ones, adding a touch of haute couture. Yohji’s team gave me complete freedom over my designs, which was lovely.”

I couldn’t get hold of any more pictures from the collection..but you can have a look at the Autumn/Winter 2008/09 collection here.

I bet you it’s fashion forward in Japan….but this is just a little weird for the rest of us!
Keep the veils for the brides-to-be!
