It’s only been a short time since David and I got engaged and I’m so excited to share the planning process with everyone on Wedding Obsession. Oddly enough, it was right around the time that I began writing for WO that David picked up my ring and stashed it away at his parents’ house. I can’t believe how clueless I was.
To start things off, I’ll tell you a little about the story of us.
We met on Boxing Day, 2009. I was out for a fun night with girl friends, our first stop was at a crowded pub. When my friends insisted that the 7 of us squeeze in at a table for 4, I initially protested but David was seated at the next table and he joined my cousin in persuading me to sit. At the urging of the cute boy in the hat, I shut up and sat down. I squished next to David on the banquette and we talked for quite a while. Not long before the girls and I were ready to leave to go dancing, I made sure David put his number in my Blackberry (I had no idea how to use it).
Looking back, I can’t believe how little my expectations were. I thought he was definitely cute, nice and friendly and hoped he would text me back, but who knew?
We began texting constantly and went on our first date four days later, and the rest, as they say, is history. I knew early on that he was absolutely “the one” for me. First of all, he puts up with me, which is no easy feat. My family adores him as well and he fits in to our noisy bunch with ease, which is certainly important.
From the very beginning of our relationship, he has surprised and amazed me with what he assures me is normal, “nice guy” behaviour. I can’t imagine what I did to deserve him. While I’m a planner and an extreme worrier, he is laid back. I’m the most impatient person on the planet and he has the patience of Jobe. He’s loyal, out-going and friendly, rarely waking up with out a smile on his face, while I’m terribly grouchy in the morning.
We first moved in together in the fall of 2010 and it’s been a whirlwind ever since. We bought a home together in spring of 2011 and we’ve had so much fun setting up house together.
On Friday December 2, I thought we were going for dinner and then to a Christmas party at our friends’ house. I was busy getting ready to go out when David got home from work. When I was finally ready to go he surprised with a little blue box. He said he had gotten me a new chain for the necklace he gave me last year for Christmas (engraved with my initials), since I had been sick and put up with moustache all through Movember. I told him he was silly for getting me a present so close to Christmas.
As I took the necklace out of the box he explained that he had to buy a new charm this time. I interrupted to argue again. Really, clueless.
He told me that he had gotten the charm engraved again, but this time, with what my initials are going to be once I change my name. Honestly, I had absolutely no idea what was going on and I was a bit of a jerk.
At that point I thought it was kind of a cruel joke, because I couldn’t wear it yet, since we weren’t engaged, and he always teased that it would be 5 or 6 years before he would propose.
It wasn’t until he started to get down on his knee that it finally dawned on me what was really happening. I was in complete and utter shock. Def-con 5 alarm bells were going crazy in my head. It was happening, it was happening! It couldn’t really be happening. I had been telling myself it wouldn’t happen until next year and I was the nut case writing on a wedding blog for fun, but it was happening!
Be quiet and pay attention, I thought to myself.
I couldn’t really move, or speak, or put a coherent thought in to words. I had to sit down. David said some very nice things, I think. I had my hands over my face and I was crying. I remember nodding my head once he asked, “Will you marry me?” and realizing that I should actually say the word “yes.”
For hours after words, all I could say was “I’m so confused.” He’d managed to surprise me, the unsurpriseable.
Since then it’s been an exciting, albeit busy time sharing the news with friends and family. We’re so excited to celebrate with our loved ones and I’m also looking forward to sharing things with you here on Wedding Obsession so make sure you follow along here and also on my blog KJ and CO.
