Thoughts on Red Lips

In my opinion, nothing makes a bride in stark white stand out more than cherry stained lips. I mean, look how stunning she looks!

Although, I hate when people talk about makeup as though they are trends that come and go, because it creates the false pretense that just about anything can be pulled off by everyone. (Even if purple blush became a trend for 2020, there’s no way I would be wearing that!!!)

Red lips do not look as great on ladies with dark or olive skin tones (like myself). Rather, the look is best for women with fair skin or those who are looking for a more ‘vintage’ look. This can be best described in the picture above where the birdcage veil, defined eyes, and dark hair complement the bold lips perfectly.

Here’s what gown designer Melissa Sweet said about her makeup inspiration for her spring catwalk collection:

“Color is always our inspiration when we start designing a collection, and the makeup is the finishing touch. This season we were inspired by an old-Hollywood glamour feeling, so we thought a bold red lip paired with soft straight hair would feel pretty and modern. A strong lip color complements a bride’s vibrant and healthy glow—and looks amazing in photographs.”

So, while I have to admit red lips are bold, sexy and glamorous, I think it should only be worn on your wedding day if it complements your skintone and features. Likewise, a bride has to have the tenacity to reapply her lipstick throughout the night to keep herself looking her best!

I agree with you, the brides here look absolutely stunning and the deep red lipstick really brings the viewers attention to the Bride’s face.

The deep cherry red is definitely the way to go opposed to something too glitery, which could look pale or have hot spots when photographed. The cheery red also looks classy :-)

I agree that the look is very classic and stunning for a wedding. I disagree with your comment that, “Red lips do not look as great on ladies with dark or olive skin tones (like myself)…” There truly is a shade of red for every skintone. A person may need to choose a red that is more burdandy or less bright but red can still be worn by ladies or vaious shades and it can be worn flawlessly.

I believe that not everyone has the personality to wear red lipstick. Red lipstick is for a woman who is 100% comfortable in her beauty, in her smile and her sensuality.

Maybe the fact that you don’t feel red lipstick looks good on you has nothing to do with your skintone at all. Maybe it’s because you don’t have the boldness and self confidence that wearing red lipstick requires.
